As part of the KMU Voices project, I had the honor of inviting my friends — Dr. Tomasz Bochenek and Dr. Paul Barach — two outstanding international experts whose presence made this event truly exceptional.
On May 14, as part of the KMU Voices series, we had a unique opportunity to engage with two globally renowned experts:
Dr. Paul Barach — an anesthesiologist (USA), researcher, representative of ASPHER, professor at the University of North Carolina (USA) and Imperial College London (UK), and a researcher at the SHEPS Center. Author of over 300 scientific publications, he is one of the world’s leading specialists in patient safety, disaster medicine, and healthcare system transformation.
He holds degrees in B. Med. Sci, MD, MPH and the title of Major (Ret.).
Dr. Tomasz Bochenek — a physician, Master of Public Health, PhD, and one of the top experts in pharmaceutical policy and public health. He is a professor at the Institute of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland).
The event took place simultaneously in Kyiv (Boryspilska Street campus) and Katowice (KMU Polish Campus, Zawiszy Czarnego 5), with real-time interpretation into Ukrainian. It was also livestreamed online for a broader audience in Ukraine. In total, the lectures were attended by over 300 participants — students and faculty from various countries.
Dr. Paul Barach delivered his lecture online:
“Safe by Design: A Closer Look at Clinical Safety”, emphasizing the need for honesty in medicine, error analysis, fostering a culture of responsibility, and creating safe environments for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Dr. Tomasz Bochenek delivered an in-person lecture titled:
“Medicines and medical devices as the essential component of the basket of guaranteed health care services. The Polish experiences, systemic evolution, and role of Health Technology Assessment in pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement.”
His presentation provided a deep analysis of systemic reforms in Polish healthcare, the importance of health technology assessment, the development of guaranteed health service packages, and the political and economic challenges related to pharmaceutical policy.
We discussed difficult yet vital topics — errors, losses, truth, systemic reform, and our collective responsibility for the future of medicine.
It was an event that encourages reflection, questions, and shared exploration of solutions.
We are sincerely grateful to the speakers for their time, openness, and professionalism — and to everyone who joined us.
The KMU Voices series continues, with more impactful meetings with leading global experts ahead.
