Congratulations to KMU students: the best scientific research presented at the international conference “Military medicine and disaster medicine: what everyone should know” (KMU Polish Campus, Decembe

On December 6, in Katowice, Poland, students of Kyiv Medical University participated in the internationalconference “Military Medicine and Disaster Medicine: What Everyone Should Know,” presenting their scientific research across seven sectional sessions.

Following the jury’s evaluation, winners were identified whose works most effectively addressed the contemporary challenges of military medicine, disaster medicine, tactical training, and rehabilitation.

The conference featured seven sectional sessions covering fundamental, clinical, surgical, dental, epidemiological, and psychosocial areas of medicine:

1. Fundamental Disciplines Section

Topic: The Role of Buffer Systems in Ergogenic Support for Athletes and Military Personnel
Presenter: Lev L’vutin
The research focused on the role of buffer systems in maintaining acid-base balance during intense physical exertion, which is critically important for both soldiers and athletes.

2. Surgery, Military Surgery, and Disaster Medicine Section
Topic: Traumatic Cardiac Herniation (Pericardial Rupture)
Presenters: Ejiroghene Marcus-Okeghene Jessie; Adegoke Faith
This presentation highlighted a rare but life-threatening condition requiring rapid diagnosis and urgent surgical intervention, particularly in combat settings.

3. Internal Medicine and Emergency Therapy Section
Topic: Tp-e/QTc Ratio as an Independent Predictor of Ventricular Arrhythmias (Antidepressant Use in Wartime Conditions)
Presenters: Meethal Thayal Amalsuhan, Daniela Carolina López Serna
The study analyzed electrophysiological predictors of arrhythmia risk in patients taking antidepressants under heightened psycho-emotional stress.

4. Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery Section
Topic: Neurohormonal Imbalance under Chronic Stress as a Factor in Oral Lesions
Presenter: Zoryana Polovko
The presentation highlighted the impact of prolonged wartime stress on oral health and emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary prevention.

5. Public Health, Patient Safety, and Epidemiology Section
Topic: Rabies in Wartime Ukraine: Impact of Population Displacement and the Rise of Stray Animals
Presenter: Esther Amarachi Ojukwu
The study examined epidemiological risks and proposed strategies to strengthen rabies prevention systems.

6. Standardized Tactical Medicine and Pre-Hospital Care Courses Section
Topic: Existential Traumatic Trigger: Takotsubo Syndrome
Presenters: Ilo Chinenye; Lord Owusu Afrifa
The report addressed the increasing incidence of Takotsubo syndrome and the importance of recognizing this condition at the pre-hospital stage.

7. Rehabilitation, Prosthetics, and Long-Term Care Section
Topic: PTSD in Military Personnel in the Context of Full-Scale War in Ukraine
Presenter: Diana Leychenko
The study highlighted the specifics of psychological rehabilitation and the significance of early intervention.

The Katowice conference served as a powerful platform for showcasing the scientific achievements of KMU students.

The presented research underscores their readiness to operate under the contemporary challenges of military and disaster medicine, and the results contribute significantly to the advancement of Ukrainian medical science.
